A Fun Find!
Looking through some of Cindy's pictures today, I found this great unintentional self-portrait. She just meant to capture the rig we created to make the hotel's bathroom sink accessible for her. [That's the shower head taped to the fancy tissue box.] But, she also gave us this gem showing the mastermind at work. Love it!

Rosa's Thanksgiving Lunch: A Tribute

Start with a beautiful salad of lettuce, avocado, dried cranberries, walnuts, pear, bleu cheese, and Rosa's homemade dressing.

Savor a wonderful and beautiful medley of mushrooms with chestnuts, roasted sweet potatoes topped with Parmesan cheese, green beens, and "just right" Brussel sprouts.

Finish with a yummy pumpkin flan, topped with whipped cream encrusted with crystallized ginger, and accompanied by crisp almond cookies.

You've just experienced the magic and majesty of one of Rosa's best lunches!

And, even more, by featuring all of Cindy's favorites, she was able to sprinkle the entire meal with the joy of recalling similar meals shared with "our dear friend".

The remix is luscious and brought back memories of our Pearl Jam tour trip last year.
This drawing perfectly captures the atmosphere and most of the spirit of that night. All that's missing is the sound!
I like that she wrote down the songs she particularly liked while she was drawing it ("Who You Are, Small Town" in the lower right corner).

I still marvel at Cindy's eagerness to explore and openness to try new experiences. How cool she was!

Here's to Cindy's birth month. I thought we could commemorate it by reviewing some of the drawings she posted in past Marches.

I always loved this illustration. The notation paper buildings and sidewalk blow my roof off!

Cindy never developed a taste for jazz. I'm not sure why, because she was able to relish dense symphonies and cacophonous movie scores. I thought it odd of someone who was able to draw like a jazz musician plays.

The third drawing that comes up when you search for "21" at Cindy's Flickr site is this one from April 21, 2007, drawn during a trip to NYC.
She loved to draw as she was experiencing a concert or play, saying that she actually remembered it much better if she studied it and put in down on paper. She also enjoyed surprising the subjects of the drawings she liked, getting their autographs and leaving them envious.

If you search Cindy's Flickr stream for "21", you get three drawings that together do a pretty good job of exemplifying her life.
First, you get this great drawing of an old wooden hand model that she loved. The period of time that she participated in "Everyday Matters"and "Illustration Friday" was magical. Her word puzzles, as I thought of them, were amazing.

Here's hoping that we all can greet this new year with hope and determination, and that we will be able to say that we are "doin' fine in 2009" often before it is done.

Three years ago, Cindy drew her first drawing of 2006, featuring two of her favorite subjects, Itemus and Annie. With spare additions of soft color, she brought them to life, playfully accentuating Annie's New Year's hat, her safety flag and the copious bracelets she frequently jingled with her finger.

This drawing was Cindy's last one for 2005, and features her familiar models Itemus, Annie and Patti, with a fourth person that I believe is Donna. It's from the perspective of the front desk, as Cindy was finishing up her stint "manning" the phones.
I love the one little touch of color she added for Patti's pink ribbon bracelet. She really captured each of them beautifully: Itemus, contemplative and open; Annie, ever watchful and sweet; and Patti, serenely sleeping amongst it all.

Thanksgiving was always a holiday that Cindy took very seriously. She always took time to say thank you to the people she appreciated, often sending cards or treats as well.

During the last week of her life, she followed suit, thanking everyone that came to see her, thanking those who cared for her, thanking those that she loved.

On Cindy's behalf, I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful comments here and also thank those of you who wrote tribute posts on other sites.

I am thankful for the life of Cindy Woods and grateful that we have her essence here with us in her lines.

Our dear friend has gone. Her passing was peaceful and with not much lingering, as she wanted.
This last week was a good one. She wasn't in any pain and felt up to visits from a multitude of friends and family. She was lucky enough to be able to tell everyone what she wanted to and to hear what she meant, the comments here included.
Thank you to everyone who has taken time to look at her drawings and follow her exploits. She has left us quite a legacy.

I'm honored to say that you are my best friend. We've shared so many great experiences that were only better by being there together.

I have so many fond memories of our great adventures: good food, beautiful places, amazing art, inspiring music, terrific movies, and more. All of it was enhanced by sharing the joy of their discovery with you, seeing them through your eyes as they materialized on paper through your pen or pencil of choice.

The joy with which you approach learning and discovering new things is infectious, your curiosity and openness to try something new intoxicating catalysts. You've taught me so much!

You've navigated through life the way that you navigated a New York sidewalk, with courage and confidence and eagerness to get to the next interesting thing, mindful of potholes, and with a clear vision of where you were headed. Your steady determination and thoughtfulness has been an ongoing inspiration to me.

You are an exceedingly generous and kind friend, especially when being exceedingly honest and forthcoming with your opinions. I thank you for helping me grow and for all you have done for me.

The greatest gift you have given me is your love and friendship. I know that you have felt that love and admiration returned. I can honestly and proudly say that the most successful endeavor of my life has been being your friend.

The challenge of my life ahead is to carry the banner of our friendship on and to try to share with others the great legacy of wisdom, warmth and grace you have bestowed on me and all of the many people who love you. I hope you'll be proud of me.

The cancer I have began as a small ulcer on my tongue, I urge anyone who notices a spot of any sort in their mouth that has not healed in two weeks to consider mentioning it to your doctor or dentist. This website, The Oral Cancer Foundation is the best place I have found to learn more about this particular type of cancer. I was lucky, my cancer was discovered 7 years ago and was easily removed with minor surgery and very little damage to my tongue. The problem with this cancer is it is persitent, it reoccured on my tongue twice more, a grace period of 3 years between each reoccurance. The battle truly began once it metastasized to the lymph nodes in my neck. There is only a 50/50 survival rate once this occurs. So early detection is the best chance for a cure. The problem is that most doctors and dentists are uneducated about what this cancer looks like. They will often pass it off as something else. My doctor dismissed the possibility for 6 months, saying that only people who smoke or chew tobacco get this cancer. But, that's not true, anyone can get it! It was a great nurse who, alarmed at the doctor's dismissal of the problem, encouraged me to seek outside help. Only then was the cancer properly diagnosed. Again, the best place place to visit is the above links at the Oral Cancer Foundation.

whether I should post these drawings or not, I don't know. I spent last week in the hospital and these are a record of those days. I came home on Friday, my battle with cancer lost, and have entered a hospice program. I wanted to let those few visitors here know why I will soon stop posting altogether. Thanks to all who have visited me and left comments, I have enjoyed the exchanges between my all Internet friends immensely and want you all to know what joy it has given to get to know you as we have shared our lives online.

Richmond Folk Festival

I arrived late in the day and stayed less than two hours so just these few sketches at the first annual Richmond Folk Festival

at one of the craft booths, this young boy in traditional garb started to sketch me, I started scribbling him too, an impromptu Portrait Party!

and three musicians from a group called Ganga, described as
Indian (Bengali) Song and Instrumental Music Ensemble

also only able to scribble just three musicians of The River Nile Band (Sudanese Popular music) before they left the stage

Jeffery Alan Love, a student at VCU School of the Arts, has started a blog similar in idea to National Novel Writing Month except instead of filling pages with 50,000 words he challenges participants to draw, completely filling in a sketchbook over the course of one month. Tomorrow I'm going to try and join in the fun, peek in at "Sketchbook Month" to see examples from months past and be inspired by the gorgeous pages you'll find there!

some sketches and an fyi, I'm a huge fan of the artist Alice Neel and just wanted to share that the documentary on her life that was released last year is soon to be available on dvd, shipping will begin Oct. 7th, it can be ordered though the usual venues (Amazon, etc) but would be of greater benefit to the filmmaker if ordered directly from his production company, SeeThink, here's a link to the trailer on YouTube, Alice Neel Trailer
